LONG-TERM STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCIES IN A MAT FOUNDATION ON CLAY SOIL

A 3-story building with a mat foundation consisting of a slab on a grid of grade beams performed poorly on clay soil. Cracking of the slab became rogressively worse as a result of the incorrect esign and fluctuations in the groundwater pressure under the foundation. The cyclic presence and absence of water rusted the steel reinforcement, and the sulfates in the clay soil caused formation of ettringite in the concrete. Plastic hinges formed in the slab and settlements occurred, causing damage to the beams. This paper is aimed to analyze, in a preliminar way, the ancient road system in a selected area of the Northern Sicily, between Segesta and Trapani. The focus are the connections between main roads (the so-called via Valeria and the hypothetical pathways) and settlements, the morphological context and the most significant toponyms from the archaeological point of view. The research is carried out by the archaeological data, contemporary and historical cartography, and it is also focused on the secondary roads.

Newspapers and humanitarian organisations have long shown that many asylumseekers and other beneficiaries of international protection are forced to live for months or even years in precarious settlements that have sprung up spontaneously throughout Italy. However, there are no official statistics on how many asylum-seekers and refugees in Italy live this way. Our survey, carried out in 2015, is the first national survey of foreign nationals living in these makeshift camps. The essay deals with waivers and transactions on employees’ rights. According to the consistent judicial overview of art. 2113 of the civil code, waivers and trans actions on rights guaranteed by mandatory rules of law or collective bargaining, only concern renunciations of rights already acquired by the holder, and not still disputed. In particular, art. 2113 of the civil code does not apply if the right can be dismissed by the right holder, as in the case of job retention.
