Real space observation of two-dimensional Bloch wave interferences in a negative index photonic crystal cavity

2008

We report here the direct observation of two-dimensional (2D) Bloch wave interferences in a negative index photonic crystal by using optical near-field microscopy techniques. The photonic crystal is formed by a defectless honeycomb lattice of air holes etched in III-V semiconductor slab. A scanning near-field optical microscope is used to visualize spatially, as well as spectrally, the light distribution inside the photonic crystal. The recorded near-field spectra and maps presented here unambiguously demonstrate the Bloch wave interferences within the photonic crystal. Then, the spectral and spatial evolution of these interferences allows us to recover experimentally the 2D band diagram of…

Gene expression levels influence amino acid usage and evolutionary rates in endosymbiotic bacteria

2005

International audience; Most endosymbiotic bacteria have extremely reduced genomes, accelerated evolutionary rates, and strong AT base compositional bias thought to reflect reduced efficacy of selection and increased mutational pressure. Here, we present a comparative study of evolutionary forces shaping five fully sequenced bacterial endosymbionts of insects. The results of this study were three-fold: (i) Stronger conservation of high expression genes at not just nonsynonymous, but also synonymous, sites. (ii) Variation in amino acid usage strongly correlates with GC content and expression level of genes. This pattern is largely explained by greater conservation of high expression genes, l…

Biexciton formation and exciton coherent coupling in layered GaSe.

2015

Nonlinear two-dimensional Fourier transform (2DFT) and linear absorption spectroscopy are used to study the electronic structure and optical properties of excitons in the layered semiconductor GaSe. At the 1s exciton resonance, two peaks are identified in the absorption spectra, which are assigned to splitting of the exciton ground state into the triplet and singlet states. 2DFT spectra acquired for co-linear polarization of the excitation pulses feature an additional peak originating from coherent energy transfer between the singlet and triplet. At cross-linear polarization of the excitation pulses, the 2DFT spectra expose a new peak likely originating from bound biexcitons. The polarizati…

Bergman and Bloch spaces of vector-valued functions

2003

We investigate Bergman and Bloch spaces of analytic vector-valued functions in the unit disc. We show how the Bergman projection from the Bochner-Lebesgue space Lp(, X) onto the Bergman space Bp(X) extends boundedly to the space of vector-valued measures of bounded p-variation Vp(X), using this fact to prove that the dual of Bp(X) is Bp(X*) for any complex Banach space X and 1 < p < ∞. As for p = 1 the dual is the Bloch space ℬ(X*). Furthermore we relate these spaces (via the Bergman kernel) with the classes of p-summing and positive p-summing operators, and we show in the same framework that Bp(X) is always complemented in p(X). Essential norm estimates for composition operators on BMOA

2013

Abstract We provide two function-theoretic estimates for the essential norm of a composition operator C φ acting on the space BMOA; one in terms of the n-th power φ n of the symbol φ and one which involves the Nevanlinna counting function. We also show that if the symbol φ is univalent, then the essential norm of C φ is comparable to its essential norm on the Bloch space.

Atomic Decomposition of Weighted Besov Spaces

1996

We find the atomic decomposition of functions in the weighted Besov spaces under certain factorization conditions on the weight. Introduction. After achieving the atomic decomposition of Hardy spaces (see [8,22, 33]), many of the function saces have been shown to admit similar decompositions. Let us mention the decomposition of B.M.O. (see [32, 25]), Bergman spaces (see [9, 23]), the predual of Bloch space (see [ 11]), Besov spaces (see [15, 4, 10]), Lipschitz spaces (see [18]), Triebel-Lizorkin spaces (see [16, 31]),... They are obtained by quite different methods, but there is a unified and beautiful approach to get the decomposition for most of the spaces. This is the use of a formula du…

Evolutionary convergence and nitrogen metabolism in Blattabacterium strain Bge, primary endosymbiont of the cockroach Blattella germanica.

2009

Bacterial endosymbionts of insects play a central role in upgrading the diet of their hosts. In certain cases, such as aphids and tsetse flies, endosymbionts complement the metabolic capacity of hosts living on nutrient-deficient diets, while the bacteria harbored by omnivorous carpenter ants are involved in nitrogen recycling. In this study, we describe the genome sequence and inferred metabolism of Blattabacterium strain Bge, the primary Flavobacteria endosymbiont of the omnivorous German cockroach Blattella germanica. Through comparative genomics with other insect endosymbionts and free-living Flavobacteria we reveal that Blattabacterium strain Bge shares the same distribution of functio…

Surface Acoustic Bloch Oscillations, the Wannier-Stark Ladder, and Landau-Zener Tunneling in a Solid

2010

We present the experimental observation of Bloch oscillations, the Wannier-Stark ladder, and Landau-Zener tunneling of surface acoustic waves in perturbed grating structures on a solid substrate. A model providing a quantitative description of our experimental observations, including multiple Landau-Zener transitions of the anticrossed surface acoustic Wannier-Stark states, is developed. The use of a planar geometry for the realization of the Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling allows a direct access to the elastic field distribution. The vertical surface displacement has been measured by interferometry.

Semigroups of composition operators and integral operators in spaces of analytic functions

2013

We study the maximal spaces of strong continuity on BMOA and the Bloch space B for semigroups of composition operators. Characterizations are given for the cases when these maximal spaces are V MOA or the little Bloch B0. These characterizations are in terms of the weak compactness of the resolvent function or in terms of a specially chosen symbol g of an integral operator Tg. For the second characterization we prove and use an independent result, namely that the operators Tg are weakly compact on the above mentioned spaces if and only if they are compact.

Norm, essential norm and weak compactness of weighted composition operators between dual Banach spaces of analytic functions

2017

Abstract In this paper we estimate the norm and the essential norm of weighted composition operators from a large class of – non-necessarily reflexive – Banach spaces of analytic functions on the open unit disk into weighted type Banach spaces of analytic functions and Bloch type spaces. We also show the equivalence of compactness and weak compactness of weighted composition operators from these weighted type spaces into a class of Banach spaces of analytic functions, that includes a large family of conformally invariant spaces like BMOA and analytic Besov spaces.
