Impact of Trade Area Environment on Bank’s Comparative Advantages

This paper analyzes the relationship between the comparative advantages of bank branches and the trade area environment. Bank branches are points of sale whose trade environment influences their activities and performance. Comparative advantages are defined, for each output mix, by the strict dominance of a production technology in a specific trade area over the production technologies of other environments. Using Shephard’s output distance functions on a sample of 728 bank branches, we compare the production technologies for different output mixes and different trade environments. About adapting Conrad's prose to film

On the example of Apocalypse Now by F. F. Coppola, Heart of Darkness by N. Roeg, The Duellists by R. Scott, The Shadow Line by A. Wajda, and Secret Sharer by P. Fudakowski, I would like to show that Joseph Conrad’s prose is a cinematic trap for film directors. This being so, I attempt to answer the question as to why it is so difficult to make a film of something that is so cinematic, when it is being read, and why film adaptations that closely follow Conrad’s narratives are less Conradian than films which are “merely” inspired by Conrad’s works.

Wizja religii cesarstwa rzymskiego według Tertuliana na podstawie "Apologetyka"

Artykuł prezentuje myśli Tertuliana na temat religii pogańskiej i chrześcijańskiej w Cesarstwie Rzymskim w II w., które zawarł w Apologetyku. W poszczególnych punktach artykułu są prezentowane porównania religii chrześcijańskiej z pogańską. Po przedstawieniu argumentów Tertuliana można stwierdzić, że nawołuje on wszystkich pogan, aby zostali chrześcijanami. Tylko w chrześcijaństwie odnajduje on prawdziwie Boga oraz czystość obyczajów, których nie ma w religiach pogańskich. Dzięki Tertulianowi poznajemy kształtowanie się chrześcijaństwa w dwóch pierwszych wiekach, a także kulty i obyczaje pogan.

W powieści „Einhart der Lächler“ Carl Hauptmann opisuje drogę życiową artysty, która okazuje się poszukiwaniem własnej tożsamości. Carl Hauptmann ubiera swą opowieść w popularną formę powieści edukacyjnej. Droga Einharta prowadzi przez instytucje sztuki, wówczas napiętnowane przez konflikt pomiędzy wykształceniem akademickim artysty a jego kreatywną wolnością. Poniższy tekst koncentruje się na osadzeniu tego napięcia w ramach historycznych. W dalszej części przedstawione zostaną powiązania głównego bohatera z zaprzyjaźnionym z Carlem Hauptmannem malarzem – Otto Muellerem.

The liberalization of the communist system in mid-1950s, disillusionment with the policy of the West, fears connected with West German revisionism, and dwindling chances of change in the situation of Central-Eastern Europe contributed to a differentiation of attitudes among the Polish emigrants. Three short “insurrection” stories written by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz in the years 1963–1974 have inspired various interpretations; it seems, however, that there are still many undeciphered codes, references, and allusions. The author’s metatextual comments as well as the implicit poetics of the stories make it possible to consider them as a dialogue with the historical, cultural and aesthetic heritage of the 19th century: as a form of its literary archeology. The article deals with many literary and aesthetic conventions employed in the stories, with the emphasis on the concept of sérénité and on various associations with 19th-century art.
