Diffusion capacity of the lung in young and old endurance athletes
2013
Lung diffusion capacity (D LCO) declines with age. A significant proportion of older endurance athletes develop exercise-induced hypoxemia (SaO2<95%). We hypothesised that master endurance athletes have a lower D LCO than age-matched non-athletes. We recruited 33 control (16 young; 17 old) and 29 male endurance athletes (13 young; 16 old) during the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships, 2012 (Jyvaskyla, Finland). To measure D LCO the participant exhaled to residual volume and then quickly inhaled to ≥ 90% total lung capacity from a gas source with 0.3% carbon monoxide. The D LCO and transfer coefficient (K CO) were corrected for the actual haemoglobin concentration. Spirometric func…
Solid-liquid mass transfer coefficients in gas-solid-liquid agitated vessels
1998
The research on mass transfer coefficients in solid-liquid agitated systems has received substantial attention in the past, due both to the interest in fundamental aspects of mass transfer between particles and turbulent fluids and to the importance of practical applications. In contrast, little information is available on solid-liquid mass transfer when a third gaseous phase is also dispersed into the system, in spite of the importance of the applications of gas-solid-liquid agitated systems. In this work a suitable dissolution technique was used to measure the solid-liquid mass transfer coefficient in gas-solid-liquid vessels stirred by either radial or axial impellers. The mechanical pow…

Automatic Secondary Cooling Control for the Continuous Casting Process of Steel
1991
Two simulation models for finding the optimal secondary cooling strategy in continuous casting process are presented. The first one is a two-dimensional off-line model for optimizing steady state casting operation. The second one is a one-dimensional model which can be used for simulating casting operation in real-time during varying casting conditions.
FE-Modelling of Continuous Casting Problem
1986
A mathematical model for simulating the heat transfer during solidification in continuous casting of steel is presented. The heat transfer coefficients along and across the strand are optimized. The evolution and location of thermal stresses are computed. Numerical examples are included.
EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF A FINITE DIFFERENCES TROMBE WALL MODEL
1983
ABSTRACT The paper describes a finite differences Trombe wall model validation, based on experimental data recorded at a passive systems test station in Central Italy. The computer code has been checked step by step, due to the different reliability of the data and to the various algorithms used in the code. Thus, cloudy and clear nights with no thermocirculation were simulated and compared with experimental data, then evening hours with thermocirculation, but no sun and, finally, a full day was simulated and compared. Some inaccuracy has been found in the simulation of wind effect on outer glass convective heat transfer coefficient. The code, however, has been found to provide data in reas…
Onset of convective rolls in a circular porous duct with external heat transfer to a thermally stratified environment
2011
A horizontal circular duct filled with a fluid saturated porous medium is studied. The external wall is assumed to exchange heat with an external environment thermally stratified in the vertical direction. The external heat transfer is modeled through a third kind boundary condition, and a Biot number associated with the external heat transfer coefficient is defined. The linear stability of the basic state where the velocity field is zero is studied numerically. The condition of neutral stability is determined, by solving the system of elliptic governing equations for the disturbances through a Galerkin finite-element method. The neutral stability curves, together with the critical values o…
ASSESMENT OF TEMPERATURE POLARIZATION IN MEMBRANE DISTILLATION CHANNELS BY LIQUID CRYSTAL THERMOGRAPHY
2014
AbstractThe measurement of local temperature distributions within a membrane distillation (MD) channel is a crucial step for the optimization of the channel and spacer geometry. This information allows the estimation of temperature polarization phenomena, which can dramatically influence the thermal efficiency of the process and the optimal choice of the geometric configuration (net spacer features, channel size, etc.). In the present work, a recently presented experimental technique, based on the use of thermochromic liquid crystals and digital image analysis, has been employed in order to assess the temperature polarization phenomena. The local heat transfer coefficient distribution on th…
ALE Simulation of Orthogonal Cutting: a New Approach to Model Heat Transfer Phenomena at the Tool-Chip Interface
2007
This paper presents a new procedure to evaluate the global heat transfer coefficient in orthogonal cutting. The knowledge of the actual heat transfer conditions is a fundamental issue as far as the life, tool wear and tool substitution interval are regarded. More in detail, an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach was utilised to model orthogonal cutting process and the numerical simulations were validated by making experimental tests for identifying cutting forces and internal tool temperatures. A mild steel was cut utilising both an uncoated (WC) and a coated (TiN) tool. On the basis of both experimental and simulative data, a consistent model of the global heat transfer coefficient as f…
Numerical Modelling of Room Thermal Comfort Conditions
2006
Particular heat transfer coefficients of building elements gives quantitative notion only about heat losses through this building element. Analysis of the overall heat balance and heat losses of complete building and study of particular contribution of building elements in overall balance allows one to figure out the state of the building and find the building elements of bounding construction with most significant heat losses. Project variants of the buildings (or rebuilding in case of renovation), which ensure the desirable economy of energy and proportions of investments can be find varying the proportions of the surface area of building elements (e.g., windows and doors). A lot of facto…
