The contribution retraces the fundamental phases of the restoration carried out by Francesco Valenti, close collaborator of Giuseppe Patricolo since 1896 and Superintendent in Palermo since 1924, in a cultural climate now marked by protests against the false restorations carried out in those years, which the most advanced culture of the time, now ready to listen to the lessons of the English intellectuals, was no longer willing to justify.

Abstract
The restoration of the Palazzo Termine Pietratagliata in Palermo took place between 1908 and 1945, but recalling its history and integrating it with new documentary evidence becomes an opportunity to evaluate the attitude of the owners, the activity of the architects which took turns during the interventions and the decisive role of the ministerial offices which assessed the feasibility, receiving the cultural heritage of the last twenty years of the 19th century. To encompass the troubled reconstruction of the events, characterized by evident philological traits but also marked by unexpected falsifying regressions, it is in fact necessary to return to the years of the development of the new conservative politics in Italian culture at the end of the nineteenth century. Recalling the decree and the circular Sui restauri degli edifizi monumentali of 1882 allows us to evaluate the cultural directions that guided the intervention proposals and understand the work of the bodies responsible for protection. The contribution retraces the fundamental phases of the restoration carried out by Francesco Valenti, close collaborator of Giuseppe Patricolo since 1896 and Superintendent in Palermo since 1924, in a cultural climate now marked by protests against the false restorations carried out in those years, which the most advanced culture of the time, now ready to listen to the lessons of the English intellectuals, was no longer willing to justify.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
