This article traces the educational career of Sara Cerrini Melauri, a key figure in the active pedagogy of the post-war period in Italy, highlighting the innovative nature of the rural school in Doccia during the 1950s. The teacher began her educational career during the Second World War, gradually developing a vision of schooling based on dialogue, participation and attention to children’s needs. Having moved from the city to the countryside after gaining permanent teaching status, she developed an educational model that was closely linked to the rural community and influenced by the experience of teacher Maria Maltoni, the Educational Cooperation Movement and the pedagogical thought of figures such as Aldo Capitini, Ernesto Codignola and Mario Lodi. The experience of the school in Doccia stands as an example of a ‘school-community’, capable of integrating learning, social life and democratic participation
