In Diseases of Women I 62 the reference to αἰδώς (αἰδέονται φράζειν), usually interpreted as a reference to patients’ modesty towards the doctor, connected with the sexual sphere, is read in light of the other occurrences of αἰσχρός in the Corpus Hippocraticum, and reconnected to the awareness, by the patients, of their condition of incompetence compared to the therapist.
